The MURL is the underground rail system which runs around the CBD of Melbourne, comprising of 4 tracks totalling 13km in distance. The maintenance of the network was managed by Mainco.
Mainco requested Way Out to supply marine grade signs onto the walls of the tunnels as well as a continuous line to be painted onto the walkway alongside the railway track. The signs would need to be placed at 50m intervals throughout the tunnel and designate the location and metreage to the nearest station.
The signs we developed were a 2mm thick marine grade aluminium panel with a luminous coating, with the text and pictogram defined using a black reflective vinyl film and treated with an anti-graffiti finish. A specially developed luminous paint containing reflective beads was used for the line marking. The end result of both was a product which was highly visible under both normal and darkened conditions.
