April 2014 – Building Code of Australia
The new Building Code of Australia is scheduled for formal release in May 2014 and will be accompanied by a series of workshops and seminars around the country. A brief summary of some of these changes is contained in the ABR online edition.
The new code addresses two areas of interest for Way Out:
- For the first time, Photoluminescent based EXIT signs will be allowed in Class 2 to Class 9 buildings. The specifications for size and luminosity have been defined within the standard and Way Out is developing a range of products which meet the requirements of the new code. These products are scheduled for general release to coincide with the new code in early May. The potential savings associated with installation, operations and maintenance of a Photoluminescent EXIT sign versus a powered EXIT sign are significant. The PL approach provides a compelling alternative for large organisations with 100’s of Powered EXIT signs, requiring 24/7 electricity consumption and expensive testing and maintenance programs.
- Two new standards have been included in the code : AS 4586-2013 Slip Resistance Classification and AS 4663-2013 Slip Resistance Measurement Standards. The Way Out range of stair nosings and anti slip products exceed the anti-slip requirements detailed in the standard. The stair nosings are available in a variety of colours and there is the option to include a photoluminescent strip. In conjunction with the PL EXIT signs, these nosings are ideal for high rise stair wells and emergency escape routes as well as stadia and transport. The anti-slip glass products are especially suitable for marine applications where the anti slip nature of the glass coating actually increases when wet.

The benefit of this approach is that the markings cannot be removed or vandalized. These pathway markings are also anti slip.
Wayout Evacuation Systems is perfectly placed to work with partners and/or customers in implementing these standards on any form of transportation.
